Today marks the opening of the San Francisco SPCA’s 22nd Annual Holiday Windows at the Macy’s in Union Square.  Last year the event contributed to the adoption of 277 animals and $34,000 in donations for the SF/SPCA.  The 2007 Holiday Windows was one of the best the SPCA has ever had and marked the 40,000th adoption since the event began 21 years ago.

The theme of this years window design comes from the famous letter written by eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon to the editor of the New York Sun, and Francis Pharcellus Church’s reply, which was printed in the paper on September 21, 1897.

It should be noted that admits all the festive decorations and holiday set-up, all of the cats and dogs on display are provided with plenty of creature comforts, including temperature controlled windows, hidden litter boxes, and comfortable sleeping areas.

SF/SPCA representatives are available during the event (November 21, 2008 through January 1, 2009 during Macy’s store hours) to answer questions.  Every animal is medically and behaviorally screened, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered and comes with a 30-day gift of pet health insurance, a free advice DVD, leash and collar (for dogs), discounts on most SF/SPCA training classes, and a goodie bag filled with other gifts and treats.

Each day, as many as 20 animals are on display and about half are adopted. SF/SPCA staff and volunteers carefully monitor the animals and rotate them frequently. Any animal that appears stressed or unhappy is immediately taken out of the window and all of the animals that are not adopted are shuttled back to the shelter at night in order to rest.

Volunteers are still needed so if you’re currently living in the San Francisco area and want to make a difference, you can click here for more details and to sign up for a two-hour shift.  Or you can call Norma Wood Metcalf, volunteer services manager, at (415) 522-3543.

LUSH Cosmetics

LUSH, an environmentally-friendly, completely vegetarian company, offers “fresh, handmade cosmetics”, such as soaps, fragrances, cleansers, and deodorants.  Their bath and beauty products are 100% vegetarian and are never tested on animals, and are made from fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, high quality essential oils, and safe synthetics.  LUSH makes all their products by hand, and no products or ingredients are ever tested on animals.  They never engage with third-party suppliers to test on their behalf, or buy ingredients from suppliers that tests its materials on animals for any purpose.  They also actively campaign against animal testing.

LUSH is also doing a lot for the environment.  You can buy about 70% of their products without any packaging, including bath bombs, shampoo bars, and solid facial cleansers.  Solid cosmetics are cheaper and better for the environment because they last longer and weigh less than bottled liquids, which take more energy to ship.  If 1 in 5 people in the U.S. switched from liquid shampoo to solid, about 22 million plastic bottles would be saved from the landfill and 6 million tons of preserved shampoo would be prevented from entering the environment. The total recycled content in all LUSH packaging is about 89%.

  • Pots and bottles are made with 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, saving about 65 tons of CO2 and 90 tons of virgin plastic, or 800 barrels of oil, each year.
  • Carrier bags are made with 100% post-consumer recycled paper, saving 100 tons of CO2 each year. They’re also now 2 grams lighter which reduces emissions even more.
  • They use biodegradable plastic bags and eco-friendly packing tape to protect products for shipment. Their packing tape is fully recyclable, tamperproof, tamper-evident, and is stronger per square inch than polypropylene.
  • Their gifts are wrapped with recycled paper and protected using shredded wood or recycled shredded paper, both of which are 100% biodegradable.

Plus, for this years catalog, they’re using paper that contains a minimum of 30% recycled content.  Also, their catalogs are printed with vegetable-based inks which are less toxic than chemical inks.

They have numerous stores in the U.S. and across the country, or you can shop online via their website.
